Opening Ceremony of the NUIST Reading Academy for New Students 2016’

On the afternoon of Sept.11, Opening Ceremony of the NUIST Reading Academy for New Students 2016’ was held in Lecture Hall, Meteorology Building at NUIST. Sir David Bell, vice Chancellor of University of Reading (UoR), Vincenzo Raimo, pro-vice Chancellor of UoR, Mr. Matthew Knowles, Consul of the British Consulate-General, Jiang Jianqing, President of NUIST, Min Jinzhong, vice president of NUIST, Zheng Youfei, president assistant and Dean of Reading Academy attended the ceremony. The participants also includes representatives from administrative departments, schools, Reading Academy, British Consulate-General, UoR alumni, teachers and 205 new students 2016’of Reading Academy. The meeting was presided over by Min Jinzhong, Vice President of NUIST.
 
On behalf of all the teaching staff and students, President Jiang Jianqing extended his warmest welcome and sincere greetings to the new students in Reading Academy and the guests from UoR. As he introduced, NUIST has cultivated a large number of outstanding meteorological elites, and has trained more than 2,800 senior meteorological technicians and managing personnel from 148 countries and regions. Additionally, NUIST will continue deepening collaboration with UoR with a view to shaping Reading Academy into a special zone in terms of innovation in training and opening for international cooperation, forging it into a model of Sino-foreign cooperative education. President Jiang also wishes that all the students can experience a brand new paradigm of development featuring mentorship, scholarship and partnership. Be determined and independent; Study hard and learn to retrospect, develop integrative approach to study; Think globally with open, inclusive, and international vision.
 
On behalf of the partner, Sir David Bell warmly welcomed the students to study in the joint programmes between the two universities. He said, since 2011, we have started teaching joint-degrees in Chemistry, Economics, Applied Maths and Environmental Science. This year, two new degrees are added in Mathematics and Environmental Engineering and in future more cooperation will be expanded to postgraduate studies, further research collaborations and student exchanges between two institutions. Then Sir David Bell committed that students both here in China and across the globe can rightly expect exceptional things from UoR: teaching from world-leading experts, top quality facilities and resources and the chance to become a part of a truly global community. He hopes the students to work hard, to do their very best, become prepared to take on life’s challenges, and become ambitious, highly employable, and highly skilled.
 
 
Mr. Matthew Knowles began his speech with Chinese, arousing the audience to burst into thunderous applause. He congratulated the “strength to strength” combination between NUIST and UoR, pointing out that UoR is a World Class university, while UNIST is a university with word class disciplines. It is very exciting to see collaboration between these two universities. Learning from the fast growing of Reading Academy in only one year, he expressed his heartfelt congratulations to our university, saying that the range and depth of higher education links between China and the UK have never been stronger and the Reading Academy is a symbol and model of the close friendship between the two countries.
Mr. Stephen Gerard Toole, representative of teachers from Reading Academy, Miss Cheng Qianhui, representative of students 2015’ and Mr. Wang Jingwen, representative of new students 2016’ took turns to give their speeches, respectively expressing the good wishes to students for their study and life, sharing her one year college life and his strong determination to achieve dreams in Reading Academy in the future.

After the ceremony, a group photo was taken in front of Tu Changwang Statue.
