Sino-German Bilateral Workshop focusing on “Climate Service Sciences”

     Nov 8-10, 2016, the Chinese-Deutsch Symposium on “Climatic Service Science: from Global General Climate Circulation Models to Adaptation Costs “was held in Hamburg, Germany. This symposium was jointly applied by Professor Wang Guojie, School of Geography and Remote Sensing, NUIST and Professor Daniela Jacob, director of Germany Climate Service Center, which was funded Euro 60,000 from Sino-German Center for Research Promotion, National Natural Science Committee. Professor Chen Lesheng, Executive Director of Sino-German Center for Research Promotion delivered a welcome speech in the opening ceremony and introduced the Center. Professor Wang Guojie and Daniela Jacob also gave their welcome address and keynote lectures.

37 experts on climate services were invited to attend this symposium and give a report. There are 22 experts from Germany, coming from Germany Climate Service Center, Max Planck Institute for Meteorology(MPI-M), Potsdam Institute for Weather Effect, Technische Universitaet München、Keele University、Universität Hamburg、Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen、Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg and other institutions；Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen, and 15 Chinese experts, coming from Tsinghua University、Tsinghua University、National Development and Reform Commission、Chinese Academy of Sciences、Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences(CAAS)、East China Normal University、Sun Yat-sen University、Chinese Academy of Social Sciences、China meteorological administration、Central China Normal University and Nanjing Forestry University.

    There were 4 parallels and 37 academic reports during this symposium, focusing on topics such as “Data and knowledge as baseline for climate service provision: Climate observations, climate modeling, process analyses and uncertainties”, “Assessment of multi-sectoral climate change impacts – challenges and opportunities”, “State-of-the-art approaches to bridge from climate change information to praxis relevant adaptation strategies” and “Transdisciplinary exchange as bases for climate change adaptation and building societal resilience”.

    Targeting on the integrated risk management of climate disaster and capacity building of adaptations, this symposium probed into the risk management and decision-making method from the view of multi-sectoral and multi-disciplinary studies and integrated models such as climate, water resources, earth, ecology and social economy. The experts agreed that the core of climate service is to offer specific climate knowledge and decision-making methods to decision makers, to improve the scientific nature of decision-making and climate resilience. It is still a challenge. Bilateral cooperation was also being discussed during this symposium, and future major cooperative fields and forms were confirmed.
