Nov. 24-28, 2016, the highest standard of academic conference in the field of history of science and technology in China-- the 14th International Conference on the History of Science in China& the 1st International Symposium on the Four Great Inventions of Ancient China was held in NUIST. Focusing on the “science and technology in Ancient China and the process of civilization”, this conference gathers over 160 experts and scholars from all over the world to probe into latest research progress in Four Great Inventions, exchange histories, traditional handcraft, history of meteorology, history of astronomy, etc. The conference enjoys a fruitful result, renewing people’s cognition of the Four Great Inventions of Ancient China, and it was mainly reported by more than 20 media.
The opening ceremony was held on the morning of Nov.25, and ahead of the ceremony, Chancellor Li Lianshui met Lloyd L. Pinas, Surinam’s ambassador to China, head of GRULAC. Lloyd L. Pinas is an old China hand, talking about profound Chinese culture with a sense of humor. They both expressed their wishes to further promote exchanges and cooperation in culture study between China and Surinam.
Chancellor Li delivered a welcome speech in the opening ceremony. Professor Sun Xiaochun, Chairman of Chinese Society for the History of Science and Technology，Efthymios Nikolaidis, president of International Union of the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology，Lloyd L. Pinas, Surinam’s ambassador to China, head of GRULAC，Professor Guo Shirong, Dean of Institute for the History of Science and Technology, Inner Mongolia Normal University attended the conference and gave their speeches individually. The opening ceremony was presided over by Vice President Zhou Weican.
Later, Chancellor Li Lianshui and Chairman Sun Xiaochun unveiled the nameplate of Institute of Traditional Chinese Techniques, which is the first Institute of Traditional Techniques in national colleges and universities.
In the conference, 12 experts were invited to present keynote lectures; 9 parallels were set; 106 scholars and experts exchanged their latest research achievements in terms of historical, cultural and meteorological aspects, focusing on Four Great Inventions, history of exchanging, history of meteorology and astronomy, history of science and technology, etc. The new discoveries of Chinese traditional Papermaking refresh people’s cognition, arousing widely attention by media.
During this conference, there was an exhibition of ancient astronomic and meteorological instrument. It is the first time for astronomic and meteorological instrument to be exhibited in International Conference on the History of Science in China. Meanwhile, the Chinese ancient papermaking and printing techniques were demonstrated during the conference. It shows the entire discipline capacity of NUIST in the history of science and technology, and increases our academic status in China. The academic achievements of this conference might rewrite the whole history of the discipline of history of science and technology, which is of prestigious academic value and cultural significance.
