  • About us

School of Atmospheric Physics in Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology (NUIST) was established in August, 2008, the predecessor of which is Department of Atmospheric Physics, one of the several departments with a long history in NUIST. Based on development for over fifty years, a whole system of undergraduate and graduadute education has been formed and now our school has been a major undertaker of intellectual training in atmospheric physics of China. Now, two majors are offered for undergraduate students: Atmospheric Science in three fields (Atmospheric Physics, Weather Modification and Atmospheric Sounding) and Lightning Protection Science and Technology. At postgraduate level, we offer three majors for master and PhD programs: Atmospheric Physics & Atmospheric Environment, Atmospheric Remote Sensing Science & Technology and Lightning Science & Technology. There are 1 Provincial Key Discipline, 1 National Key Construction Discipline and 2 Provincial Talent Scientific and Technical Innovation Teams in our school. Steady and talent research teams in areas of Cloud Precipitation Physics and Weather Modification, Atmospheric Chemistry and Climate Change, Atmospheric Sounding and Remote Sensing and Lightning Science and Technology have been built up. In recent 3 years, staff in our school have undertaken over 200 research projects, Major Project of Chinese National Programs for Fundamental Research and Development (973 Program), Chinese National Programs for High-tech Research and Development (863 Program), National Key Technology Research and Development Program, Special Fund for Meteorology Research in the Public Interest, National Projects of Science Foundation and other projects included, and the total research funding has risen to 40,000,000 approximately. Additionally, over 200 papers indexed by SCI (E) and EI journals and 20 monographs and textbooks have been published and more than 10 patents have been approved in the 3 years. For outstanding work in research and teaching, we have won 3 provincial and ministerial science and technology awards, 2 municipal and Provincial Department progress prizes in science and technology and 1 second prize of teaching achievement for higher education of Jiangsu Province.

Our School has a fine environment and advanced facilities for teaching and research. Several research institutions have been established here, such as Key Laboratory for Atmospheric Physics and Environment of CMA, Integrated Observation, Training and Practice Base of CMA, Laboratory for Radar, Satellite and Remote Sensing and Laboratory for Lightning Protection. Over 600 instruments are in service for various research projects, the total price of which is about 30,000,000. Now, our school has become a key high-level intellectual training base for research fields of Cloud Precipitation Physics, Atmospheric Environment, Atmospheric Remote Sensing and Lightning Science and Technology in China, and also a key training base for WMO.

In the past 50 years, over 2000 undergraduate students and 500 graduate students have graduated from this school, and their academic credits and degrees are widely recognised by famous overseas universities. Many of these graduates have become key cadres and managerial experts in meteorological departments of various levels and considerable amounts of them are famous scholars and leading experts now.
