  • About us

The School of Mathematics and Statistics, Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, was founded as the mathematics teaching and research office in the 1960s, through basic faculty, department of mathematics, college of mathematical and physical sciences, and renames the school of mathematics and statistics in 2011, November. The school consists of 1 faculty, 3 departments, 1 laboratory center and several research institutions. Now the school has 766 enrolled students, including 120 PhD and masters. “Mathematics” is the key discipline of China Meteorological Administration.

The school offers three key disciplines including information and computing science, applied statistics, and mathematics and applied mathematics, which are all key specialties of Jiangsu Province. The school adopts the cultivation method of “enrolling as major, cultivating from large subject, diverting by interest”. In recent years the school has opened many characteristic class in accordance with the need of the society, including: “atmospheric science mathematical class”, “information and computing science (academic advanced class)”, “information and computing science (international curriculum experimental class)”, “mathematics and applied mathematics (mathematics and meteorology Changwang international advanced class)”

The School of Mathematics and Statistics has 71 full-time teachers, including 22 professors, 1 specially-appointed professor of Jiangsu Province, 1 Fok Ying-TongEducation Foundation winner, 20 teachers selected as “333 project” of Jiangsu Province and Jiangsu Qinglan Project. The school has also 6 teachers who obtained PhD degree from universities overseas, and 1 full-time foreign teacher. All the full-time teachers under 45 have doctor degrees and 63% of teachers have the experience to study abroad, where the time studying abroad is altogether 72.6 years. Additionally, the school has 8 foreign part-time specially-appointed professors, who work in the university for over one month every year.

The laboratory center in the school is the experimental demonstration center of Jiangsu Province, which owns first class hardware and software development environment. This has an area of more than 1000 square meters, including mathematical modelling, mathematical education and space weather laboratories. The laboratory center has high performance calculation system, which has a sustained computing speed of 126 trillion operations per second.

Based on the idea of “Everyone is excellent, everyone will be succeed”, the school constructs sorted cultivation model, establishes multi-agent collaborative platform, fosters three in one resources and innovates the talents training path, to explore the new model of diversified classified talents training, in the purpose of cultivating the academic talents with global view and original innovation ability, and excellent application ability.

Staff and students
The School of Mathematics and Statistics, led by Professor Yong Jiang, is staffed by experts of mathematics, statistics, space weather, information and computing. The school has staffs over 80, including 77 full-time teachers, 17 professors and 26 associate professors.
About 800 undergraduate students are currently registered for BSc degrees involving three majors; a further 90 postgraduate students are registered for research, MSc and PhD degrees.

Teaching and learning
Teaching and learning provides leadership, service, and support in the development, implementation, and dissemination of research-based teaching an learning resources aligned with national learning standards. We strive to build strong and lasting partnerships that will support school districts in their preparation for  educators and students in providing high quality instruction and to achieve  high levels.

Research
The school has a Mathematics Education Experiment Centre, Institute of Space Weather, Fluid Dynamics Research Institute and other institutions. In recent years, the school has undertaken a large number of research projects, including the national projects and others. The scientific researches have some impact in the international arena, such as being issued by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Norbert Gerbier-Mumm Award. The School and the National Satellite Meteorological Centre have extensive cooperation in the weather-disciplinary construction and space weather services.
